MATINICUS ISLAND:

Matinicus Island is located about 20 miles south of Rockland, Maine. It is the most remote of the inhabited year round islands. Matinicus is an Indian name meaning alternatively “grassy Island” or “the place of wild turkeys.”

Matinicus Harbor is one of the few in Maine that’s home to almost exclusively working vessels. It’s almost 2 miles long and 1mile wide, with 750 acres filled with hundreds of species of plants, birds and wildlife. The shores are rocky, with exceptions to our 2 large sandy beaches. Matinicus is a great place for artists, bird watchers, or anyone who enjoys just reading a good book or taking long walks on the beach or nature trail
